Óbidos Castle and Village : Portugal's Perfect Medieval Getaway
Perched on a hilltop, encircled by ancient walls, Óbidos is a standout even in a country packed with picturesque towns. Just an hour north of Lisbon, this medieval village hits the sweet spot between historic charm and lively culture. With its whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets, and towering castle, Óbidos feels like a movie set — but it's very much alive.
A Walk Through Time
The first thing you'll notice is the castle. Originally a Roman fort, it took its present form in the 12th century after Portugal's first king reclaimed the area from the Moors. Today, the castle stands as a Pousada (a luxury hotel inside a historic building), but even if you're not checking in, walking its battlements gives you stunning views over the village and the surrounding vineyards.
Inside the walls, Óbidos is tightly packed but endlessly walkable. The main street, Rua Direita, is lined with bookshops, boutiques, and cafes, many housed in buildings dating back hundreds of years. Every doorway and window is framed by vibrant bougainvillea and colorful azulejos (ceramic tiles).
Famous Festivals
Óbidos knows how to throw a party. The biggest event is the Óbidos Medieval Market, held every summer. For two weeks, the village turns back the clock with costumed parades, jousting tournaments, and food stalls serving hearty medieval fare. Come hungry — and ready to drink from a clay goblet.
In the spring, the International Chocolate Festival takes over. Streets fill with massive chocolate sculptures, workshops, tastings, and contests. Kids and adults both lose their minds over it.
In December, Óbidos transforms into "Vila Natal," a full-blown Christmas village, complete with ice rinks, carnival rides, and plenty of mulled wine.
Ginja de Óbidos: Cherry Liquor in a Chocolate Cup
You can't leave Óbidos without trying Ginja (or Ginjinha) — a sour cherry liqueur that's sweet, a little boozy, and completely addictive. What sets Óbidos apart is how it's served: in a tiny edible chocolate cup. You drink the liqueur, then eat the cup. No waste, all pleasure.
You'll find little stalls all over the village selling Ginja for a few euros a pop. Some locals even debate who makes the best homemade version. (Pro tip: if you find a shop with a long line of locals, that's the one to try.)
Why Óbidos Should Be On Your List
It's touristy, sure, but in the best way. Óbidos isn't just a photo op; it has an energy that pulls you in, especially during festivals. Whether you're wandering the quiet back streets, watching knights battle under the shadow of the castle, or sipping cherry liqueur from a chocolate cup, Óbidos offers a taste of history and celebration you won't find anywhere else.
